The MTHFR (Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase) gene plays a key role in folate metabolism and the methylation cycle. MTHFR enzyme activity is affected by single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), and the two variants C677T and A1298C are among the most important alterations that can lead to reduced enzyme activity and cause mild to moderate hyperhomocysteinemia.
These polymorphisms have been extensively evaluated in various studies for their association with the following diseases:
- Premature cardiovascular diseases
- Thrombosis
- Pregnancy complications and recurrent miscarriage
- Neural tube defects (NTD)
- Certain cancers
