Acute respiratory infections are one of the leading causes of mortality from infectious diseases worldwide. These infections are caused by various pathogens including viruses, bacteria, and fungi, claiming approximately four million lives annually across the globe. Over 98% of these cases are related to lower respiratory tract infections. The mortality rate of these diseases is very high in low and middle-income countries, particularly among infants, children, and the elderly. The severity of the disease depends on the type of pathogen, patient’s physical condition, and environmental factors, and can range from mild asymptomatic infections to severe and fatal diseases.

Individuals at high risk include immunocompromised patients, pregnant women, those with chronic heart, lung, kidney diseases or sickle cell disease, children under two years of age, and the elderly over 65 years old. These groups are more susceptible to diseases such as common cold, pharyngitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia. If left untreated, these infections may lead to respiratory failure or chronic lung diseases.

Respiratory infections are typically transmitted through direct contact with infected individuals, respiratory droplets, or contaminated surfaces and therefore spread rapidly. Despite similar symptoms among different pathogens, treatment methods differ significantly depending on the causative agent; therefore, rapid and accurate detection of the causative pathogen plays a key role in effective treatment and preventing disease spread.

The Real-Time PCR technique, due to its speed, accuracy, and high sensitivity, is one of the most advanced methods for detecting respiratory pathogens. In this regard, the 21 Respiratory Pathogens Real Time PCR Kit from ap-rad has been designed and manufactured for rapid, sensitive, and differential detection of 21 respiratory pathogens.

This kit can simultaneously detect 12 viruses including:
