Catalase Test Reagent (Catalase Test)
Catalase test is one of the simple and rapid microbiological assays used for detecting the presence or absence of the catalase enzyme in bacteria and plays an important role in the initial identification and differentiation of bacteria.
Principle of the Catalase Test
The catalase enzyme can decompose hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) into water (H₂O) and oxygen (O₂). This reaction occurs as follows:

If the enzyme is present in the bacterium, the released oxygen forms visible bubbles at the site of contact with the reagent.
Interpretation of Catalase Test Reagent Results
Catalase-positive bacteria:
Rapid formation of oxygen bubbles after adding hydrogen peroxide
(e.g., Staphylococcus spp.)
Catalase-negative bacteria:
No bubble formation or visible reaction
(e.g., Streptococcus spp.)
