Description

Cryptococcus neoformans/gattii Detection Kit | Cryptococcus neoformans/gattii Real Time PCR Kit

Fungi Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii:

The fungi Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii are among the pathogenic yeasts in humans, belonging to the genus Cryptococcus and the family Cryptococcaceae. These fungi possess DNA genetic material and are naturally found in various environments, including soils contaminated with bird droppings, decaying wood, and certain tree species.

The infectious spores of these fungi enter the human body through inhalation. After entry, they can affect different parts of the body. It’s important to note that cryptococcosis is not transmissible from an infected person to others; infection occurs solely through contact with environmental sources.

Following the entry of spores into the respiratory system, the lungs are the primary site of involvement. At this stage, the lung infection may remain asymptomatic or present with symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, fever, weakness, and fatigue.

If the infection progresses, the fungus can spread through the bloodstream to other organs. One of the most significant and dangerous manifestations of the disease is the involvement of the central nervous system, leading to cryptococcal meningitis. This condition is accompanied by symptoms like severe and persistent headache, fever, nausea and vomiting, stiff neck, impaired consciousness, and other neurological complications. If not diagnosed and treated promptly, it can be life-threatening for the patient.

Epidemiologically, Cryptococcus neoformans is predominantly observed in immunocompromised individuals, such as patients with HIV/AIDS, organ transplant recipients, and those undergoing chemotherapy.

In contrast, Cryptococcus gattii has the ability to cause infection not only in immunocompromised individuals but also in healthy people. Besides the lungs and central nervous system, involvement of the skin, bones, and other body tissues has also been reported in some cases, underscoring the importance of accurate diagnosis of this pathogen.

Diagnosis of Cryptococcus neoformans and gattii | Cryptococcus neoformans/gattii

Given the similarity of clinical symptoms of cryptococcosis with other fungal infections and even some non-infectious diseases, rapid and differential diagnosis of these two species is of high importance. In this regard, AP-RAD (Amir Peyvand Research and Development) Company, with the aim of rapid, sensitive, and specific identification of Cryptococcus neoformans/gattii and differentiating them from other human pathogenic fungi, has designed and produced the Cryptococcus neoformans/gattii Real Time PCR Kit. This kit, utilizing Real-Time PCR technology, enables accurate and reliable diagnosis and plays an effective role in improving laboratory diagnostic processes, treatment decisions, and reducing complications arising from this fungal infection.
