Herpes Simplex Viruses (HSV) are single-stranded DNA viruses that cause herpes (cold sores) in humans.

• HSV-1 is typically transmitted through oral contact and causes oral herpes, although it can also cause genital herpes.
• HSV-2 is primarily transmitted through sexual intercourse and is the cause of genital herpes.

Oral and genital infections are often asymptomatic or unrecognized, but can cause painful blisters or sores, ranging from mild to severe. These viruses remain in the body for life, and disease symptoms may recur over the years. In addition to herpes, both types of HSV can cause viral meningitis (the most common form of aseptic meningitis).
