Rotavirus Detection Kit | Rotavirus Detection rRT‑PCR Kit

The Rotavirus Detection Kit developed by Amir Peyvand Research and Development Company (AP‑RAD) is designed for the rapid, sensitive, and specific detection of rotavirus in stool samples from patients with diarrhea. Due to the high level of viral shedding in feces, molecular diagnostic methods such as Real‑Time PCR provide high sensitivity and multiple analytical advantages, enabling the detection of the virus within a short period of time alongside relevant clinical and epidemiological risk factors. Viral RNA extracted from samples is amplified using Real‑Time PCR and detected using rotavirus‑specific fluorescent reporter probes.

What is Rotavirus?

Rotavirus is the leading cause of diarrheal disease among infants and young children, although it rarely affects adults. Nearly every child worldwide is infected with rotavirus at least once before the age of five. The virus belongs to the Reoviridae family and possesses a double‑stranded RNA genome composed of 11 segmented parts. Rotavirus A is the most common type, accounting for more than 90% of human rotavirus infections.

Transmission and Public Health Importance

Rotavirus is transmitted through the fecal–oral route and infects the cells of the small intestine, causing damage and leading to gastroenteritis. Although rotavirus is responsible for the hospitalization of many infants and children due to severe diarrhea, its importance in public health—especially in developing countries—has often been underestimated. The virus can also infect animals, including livestock. Rotavirus was first discovered in 1973 by Ruth Bishop and her colleagues.

Treatment and Prevention

Rotavirus enteritis is usually easily treatable in children; however, in children under five years of age it can become severe and even life‑threatening. In 2019, rotavirus caused more than 151,000 deaths due to diarrhea and dehydration. In the United States, before the introduction of rotavirus vaccination programs, the virus caused approximately 2.7 million cases of severe gastroenteritis in children each year, resulting in about 60,000 hospitalizations and 37 deaths annually. After the introduction of rotavirus vaccines, hospitalization rates significantly decreased. Public health campaigns aimed at combating rotavirus focus on oral rehydration therapy (ORS) and vaccination to prevent the disease. The incidence and severity of rotavirus infections have significantly declined in countries where the vaccine has been incorporated into childhood immunization programs.
